Naming your calendar properly – without a season or a year

Your calendar's name looks like a detail, but it decides whether your subscribers stay with you over the years. The rule is simple: no season, no year, no time span in the name.

Why not “First team schedule 2026/27”?

Because a calendar on calovo is permanent. A name with a year tempts you into creating a second calendar for the new season – and that is the most expensive mistake you can make here: the subscribers stay on the old calendar, which never receives new events again. Among providers who did this, an average of 63 % of subscribers were stranded on the old calendar. They notice nothing – their calendar simply stays empty one day.

Better names describe the audience instead of the period:

  • “First team schedule” instead of “First team schedule 2026/27”
  • “Home matches Women 1” instead of “Home matches autumn 2026”
  • “Concerts” instead of “Concerts 2026”

Renaming is safe at any time

This is the point where our old support answer was wrong – so, explicitly and for good: renaming an existing calendar is completely safe for subscriptions.

  • All subscribers stay. A subscription is tied to the internal calendar ID, not to the name. Whoever subscribed stays subscribed.
  • The public address stays the same. The calendar URL is generated from the name once, when the calendar is created, and is not regenerated automatically when you rename it – existing links, widgets, and QR codes keep working. Exception: if you deliberately tick “Re-create URL alias” while editing, the address does change, and old links, widgets, and QR codes stop working (your subscribers keep their events regardless).
  • For your subscribers, only the displayed calendar name changes, on their app's next fetch.

At the season change: rename instead of creating a new calendar

So when the new season starts: do not create a new calendar. Add the new events to the existing one – with an adjusted name if you like. calpit now also points this out when you create a calendar that closely resembles an existing one with subscribers; from there a direct path leads to renaming.

If two calendars are already in circulation, the old one is a dead end for your subscribers. Point them to the current calendar actively – from their side, New season, but no new matches in your calendar? describes exactly this situation.
