Kurz nach Kriegsende 1945 startet im Erzgebirge eines der größten Geheimprojekte der Nachkriegszeit: Unter dem Tarnnamen "Wismut" graben Arbeiter nach Uran für Stalins Atombombe.
Sachsen und Thüringen sind im Kalten Krieg anfangs die wichtigsten Uran-Lieferanten Moskaus. Zehntausende schuften unter strenger Geheimhaltung und Lebensgefahr. Viele kommen ums Leben - durch Unfälle und die Langzeitfolgen radioaktiver Strahlung.
1945 verändert die erste Atombombenexplosion das Machtgefüge der Welt für immer. Um im atomaren Wettlauf mit den USA mitzuhalten, benötigt die Sowjetunion Tausende Tonnen Uran. Mit Hochdruck lässt Stalin in ganz Osteuropa danach suchen. In Sachsen werden seine Geologen fündig, die Geigerzähler schlagen aus. In alten Silberminen schlummern riesige Uranvorkommen.
"Wismut" - hinter diesem Namen verbirgt sich ab 1947 eines der geheimsten Industrieprojekte der Nachkriegszeit. Dort fördern sie das Uran für das sowjetische Atomprogramm. Am 29. August 1949 ist es so weit: Die Sowjetunion zündet ihre erste Atombombe. Das Uran aus der "Wismut" ist hierfür ein entscheidender Faktor.
Das Erzgebirge wird zum Hotspot des Kalten Krieges. Zehntausende Bergarbeiter werden in die Region gebracht, um nach Uran zu graben. Doch die Bedingungen sind lebensgefährlich: Einstürze und Unfälle sowie die Belastung mit Staub, Radongas und radioaktiver Strahlung gehören zum Alltag.
Rund um Johanngeorgenstadt, Schneeberg und Schlema entstehen neue Schächte, Siedlungen und Sperrzonen. Zeitweise beschäftigt die "Wismut" mehr als 200.000 Menschen und steigt auf zum weltweit größten Uranbergbaubetrieb. Trotzdem ist es ein Verlustgeschäft, denn was die DDR an die Sowjetunion liefert, sind Reparationen für den verlorenen Krieg.
Die "Wismut" ist in der DDR topsecret. Sowjetsoldaten sichern die Anlagen. Wer unter Spionageverdacht gerät, muss um sein Leben fürchten. Allein zwischen 1951 und 1953, so der Historiker Rainer Karlsch, werden rund 70 "Wismut"-Kumpel in der Sowjetunion hingerichtet.
Gleichzeitig lockt das Unternehmen mit hohen Löhnen und Privilegien. Für viele Familien bedeutet die Arbeit einen Ausweg aus Not und Hunger der Nachkriegsjahre. Es ist der Beginn einer ambivalenten Geschichte zwischen Hoffnung, Aufstieg und Leid. Die Folgen des Raubbaus werden erst Jahre später deutlich.
Uran aus dem Erzgebirge macht die Sowjetunion zur Atommacht. Doch der Preis für die Jagd nach dem radioaktiven Stoff ist hoch: Bis heute sterben Bergleute an Krebs, ganze Dörfer sind verschwunden, Landschaften verwüstet. Die einzigartige Geschichte der "Wismut" wirkt bis heute nach.
